450 Booth Street

Building from the Ground Up

Commercial Project

Project Scope

Ottawa Electric completed multi-unit electrical contractor Ottawa work for 450 Booth Street, a new stacked-home rental building for Ottawa Community Housing.

Working with Hein Construction, the project included electrical systems for 32 new rental units, including lighting, power outlets, electrical panels, smart metering, solar system wiring, and distribution coordination.

The project included third-party smart metering with no meter stack. The distribution setup included one common panel, one 400A 3-phase panel feeding 12 units, and two 200A 3-phase panels feeding the remaining 20 units.

Because the main distribution came from a Phase 1 building that was not part of Ottawa Electric’s original scope, the team coordinated with another electrical contractor to connect both buildings and meet halfway for the underground conduit.

The Problem

The project required a complete electrical setup for 32 new stacked rental homes, with distribution, lighting, power, smart metering, and solar-related infrastructure.

One of the main challenges was that the original electrical plans for service distribution to each unit did not meet electrical code. Ottawa Electric worked with ESA and the engineers to redesign the service main distribution and create a compliant plan.

The site also required a large amount of underground conduit because the main distribution building was not attached to the units. Underground conduit had to be run from the main panels to each unit.

The Process

Ottawa Electric completed the electrical rough-in and distribution work for the new stacked-home units, including lighting systems, power outlets, panels, and unit-level electrical infrastructure.

The electrical distribution included third-party smart metering, no meter stack, one common panel, one 400A 3-phase panel feeding 12 units, and two 200A 3-phase panels feeding the remaining 20 units.

The team also completed solar system wiring support, including conduit, wiring, metering infrastructure, coordination, and connection preparation.

For life-safety requirements, Ottawa Electric installed stand-alone smoke/CO detectors in each unit.

Throughout the project, the team coordinated closely with other trades to make sure fire separations between units were completed as specified.

The Result

The 450 Booth Street project is now 100% completed and was finished on schedule.

The completed building includes electrical systems supporting 32 new stacked rental homes, including lighting, power, smart metering infrastructure, solar wiring support, panels, and unit-level smoke/CO detection.

The project supports new Ottawa Community Housing rental units with safer, code-compliant electrical infrastructure and a redesigned distribution setup.

What Made This Project Unique

This project required major coordination between Ottawa Electric, Hein Construction, ESA, engineers, another electrical contractor, and other trades on site.

The service main distribution had to be redesigned because the original electrical plans did not meet electrical code. Ottawa Electric worked with ESA and the engineers to create a revised plan that could safely feed each unit.

Another unique part of the project was the underground conduit work. Since the main distribution building was not attached to the units, conduit had to be run underground from the main panels to each unit.

The team also coordinated carefully with other trades to make sure fire separations between units were completed as required.

Compliance and Safety

This project included ESA permits, inspections, Hydro Ottawa coordination, and solar-related inspections.

Ottawa Electric’s work supports code-compliant electrical distribution, smart metering infrastructure, unit-level smoke/CO detection, and safe electrical systems for the new rental units.
