Carleton University Library

Library Lighting Upgrade

Commercial Project

Project Scope

Ottawa Electric completed a commercial electrical renovation for the Carleton University MacOdrum Library Archives on the 5th floor at 1125 Colonel By Drive in Ottawa.

Working with Matt Creamer Contracting Inc., the project involved upgrading the electrical systems within the library archives expansion area. The scope included study areas, office spaces, board room areas, archive areas, lighting zones, emergency lighting, fire alarm relocation, and modern lighting controls.

The project included removing existing fixtures and installing 140 new LED light fixtures. Ottawa Electric also upgraded emergency lighting coverage, relocated and added fire alarm devices, and integrated a modern lighting control system with dimming, occupancy sensors, scene controls, and centralized controls.

The Problem

The Carleton University Library archives area needed an electrical refresh to improve lighting quality, emergency lighting coverage, fire alarm device placement, and lighting control functionality.

Because the project was located in a university library environment, the work had to be completed within a tight summer schedule before regular campus activity increased. The project also required careful coordination around existing electrical infrastructure, lighting circuits, fire alarm devices, emergency lighting circuits, and other trades.

The space needed better lighting for study, office, board room, and archive use, while still maintaining safe emergency systems and meeting inspection requirements.

The Process

Ottawa Electric removed the existing light fixtures and installed 140 new LED fixtures across the project area.

The lighting scope included new lighting zones, dimming, occupancy sensors, and modern lighting controls. The system included centralized lighting controls and scene controls to improve how the space is managed for different library and archive uses.

Emergency lighting was upgraded to improve full coverage throughout the renovated area. This included testing and verification to confirm that the emergency lighting system was operating properly.

The fire alarm scope included relocating and adding devices, including strobes, pull stations, bells, smoke/heat detectors, annunciator-related work, system tie-ins, programming, commissioning, and verification/testing.

Ottawa Electric also coordinated work around existing circuits, reused existing infrastructure where appropriate, and worked within the university’s summer schedule to complete the project on time.

The Result

The Carleton University Library project was completed on schedule and within budget.

The finished work improved lighting quality, upgraded emergency lighting coverage, modernized lighting control, and helped ensure safer life-safety systems throughout the renovated archives area.

All emergency systems passed inspection, supporting a safer and more functional learning, study, and archive environment for Carleton University.

What Made This Project Unique

This project required Ottawa Electric to complete a detailed electrical upgrade inside a university library environment.

The work had to be completed during summer break, within a July 1 to August 31 schedule, so the upgraded space would be ready before regular university activity returned.

The project also required careful coordination around existing lighting circuits, emergency lighting, fire alarm devices, ceiling work, and modern lighting controls. Because the work took place in a library archives area, the finished system needed to support both functional lighting and safe emergency system performance.

Compliance and Safety

This project included ESA permits, inspections, fire alarm verification/testing, and emergency lighting testing.

Ottawa Electric’s work supported important institutional safety requirements, including emergency lighting, fire alarm device relocation, fire alarm add-ons, and inspection-ready life-safety systems.
