EV CHARGER FAQ
Frequently
Asked Questions
EV charging is the process of using EV charging equipment to deliver electricity to your car’s battery. When an EV charging station is installed in your home, the system taps into the home electric grid to charge the battery in your electric vehicle through a connector or plug.
Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 are the main types of electric vehicle charging.
- Level 1 charging is done through a 120-volt wall plug. This type is typically the slowest but is often the only type homes are compatible with.
- Level 2 chargers use a 240-volt outlet and can often be found in homes and public charging stations. Level 2 is almost 15 times faster than level 1!
- Level 3 stations use a 480-volt system. With level 3 stations, you can usually charge an EV’s battery to 80% in just 30 minutes. This is the most expensive type because it will require significant modifications to your electrical system at home.
A few studies have shown that although fast charging with level 3 stations can have a negative impact on battery life, it should be minimal. Especially if a level 3 station is not your primary charging source.
With DC chargers, the power is converted within the charger itself, whereas with AC chargers, the power is converted within the actual electric vehicle. This converter in your EV is called an “onboard charger” and it converts power from AC to DC. With AC chargers, the charging speed is around 22kW-43kW per km/h. With DC chargers, the speed is between 50-100kW per km/h.
