School Electrical Upgrade
Ottawa Electric completed a commercial electrical renovation for St. Luke School in Ottawa, working with The FIA Group on a summer renovation schedule.
The work covered the full third floor of the school, including classrooms, hallways, washrooms, common areas, offices, and the boiler room. The project included renovation electrical services, removal and reinstallation of 140 light fixtures, fire-rated canopy installation over each fixture, an LED lighting upgrade, occupancy sensors, a new lighting control system, a scene-selection keypad, emergency lighting upgrades, fire alarm device upgrades, and touch-free washroom controls.
Because all fixtures had to meet fire-rated requirements, Ottawa Electric installed fire-rated canopies over each fixture. The project also had to be completed during summer break, within a July 1 to August 31 schedule, so the upgraded school areas would be ready on time.
The third floor of St. Luke School needed a full electrical upgrade to support safer, more modern building systems.
The project required more than a standard lighting replacement. Ottawa Electric had to remove and reinstall 140 fixtures, install fire-rated canopies, upgrade the lighting system, add occupancy sensors, install a scene-selection keypad, upgrade emergency lighting, add and replace fire alarm devices, and modernize touch-free washroom controls.
The work also had to be completed on a school schedule, during summer break, while coordinating with other trades and managing access limitations, fire-rated ceiling requirements, and a tight project deadline.
Ottawa Electric began by removing and reinstalling 140 light fixtures across the third floor. Since each fixture required fire-rated protection, the team installed fire-rated canopies over every fixture to support the project’s fire-safety requirements.
The lighting scope included an LED upgrade, occupancy sensors, and a new commercial lighting installation control system with a scene-selection keypad. This gave the renovated areas more modern and flexible lighting control.
The fire alarm scope included new fire alarm devices, strobes, pull stations, bells, smoke and heat detectors, annunciator-related work, programming, commissioning, inspection, verification, and testing.
The emergency lighting upgrade included new battery units, remote heads, exit signs, and improved emergency lighting coverage throughout the project area.
Ottawa Electric also completed touch-free washroom control work, including sensors, automatic switches, door operators, hand dryers, faucets, and auto flush systems. These upgrades helped modernize the washrooms and reduce contact points for students, staff, and visitors.
The St. Luke School upgrade was completed on schedule and within budget.
The completed project provided the school with upgraded LED lighting, occupancy sensors, fire-rated fixture protection, improved lighting controls, new emergency lighting, upgraded fire alarm devices, and modern touch-free washroom controls.
The finished work supports a safer, more functional third-floor environment while improving the school’s lighting, life-safety systems, accessibility, and day-to-day usability.
